Plants or Seeds? Tips to help grow your own plants

Here then are some tips to help you grow your own plants from seeds:

* Buy your seeds from reputable sources. In other words, start with high quality seeds. Sometimes the best seeds you can get are from your friends who’re experienced gardeners.

* Save your own seeds carefully. Saving seeds isn’t as easy as merely saving and drying them from year to year. Different seeds require different drying methods. Be sure to do your research so you know the proper way to care for your particular seed.

* Start with clean pots and utensils. You don’t want to spread diseases or have soil that’s full of dangerous pests, especially when you’re trying to grow fragile starts. That’s why it’s a good idea to start with “sterile” soil. Store-bought potting soil is likely better than the soil in your backyard.

* Check lighting and water requirements. You can buy a plant growth light to help your seeds take root and grow. Also, be sure to find out how much water your starts need. Some may need a little water as often as every day or every other day, while others will die if you give them too much water.

* Acclimatise your young plants. Young plants that you grew indoors from seeds need to get used to the relatively harsh conditions outdoors, including the sun (plants can get sunburned!), the relative cold, and the wind. That’s why as the weather warms up you should start taking your young starts outside. You can do it for just a few hours per day at first and gradually extend the time you leave them outside until they’re acclimated.

In sum: It’s fun and rewarding to start your gardens from seeds that you grow yourself. Just be sure to research your flowers and other plants to find out the best growing conditions. And set some of your budget aside to buy plants.
